About

Views from a resident of Minneapolis-St. Paul where it looked like we were all going to end up paperless, with no morning newspaper to read, as the media companies folded. In the paperless world, what would we do, and what would the effect be on human liberty?

I am named after my great grandfather. He was a stock broker at the start of the 20th Century. His eldest son was born in 1896. By the time I was born my grandfather was living in a home in the shadows of Nicollet Park, in a property owned by his father. The picture you see is Nicollet Park. It is a place that had a large affect on my formation.

I am in the excavating business here, so that from the present the layers of the past can be seen. I think it was William Faulkner who wrote that the past is never dead. It is not even past.

Historians someday will look back on the cause and effect of the internet on human civilization, on how war was waged, on business, on people, and on relationships. Would Darwin’s Theory still apply?

The news was anchored to the world and a date in time. Eventually it was absorbed into history. And the world sure seemed out of control lately. The greed of people was matched up to all the places of the world. The stories of the cost of food, the price of gas, the false vales of housing prices …Fannie May, Freddie may not
Hail Mary. I wondered if she tired of the same old prayer to her, when people did not know what else to say. I read this homily delivered by Wllliam Byron, S.J., of Loyola College in Maryland on May 12, 2005 at a Baccalaureate Mass at Creighton University. He talked about “post-Resurrection time, when Jesus ‘showed up’ from time to time to visit with his disciples, his closest friends who were severely shaken by the current events, intending to shore up their spirits, strengthen their faith, and boost their confidence in themselves to deal with whatever lay ahead in an unknown future. As I said, Jesus would ‘show up’ from time to time and they were never sure where or when….’ Wllliam Byron, S.J. His description of prayer—was the same description that I had about writing. “It’s a habit that it is up to you now to cultivate, if you have not already done so. It doesn’t mean reading words that someone else wrote printed in a prayer book. How can anyone know what you want to say to God, or, more important, what God wants to say to you? REMAINDER LOST.

“If you write for God, you will reach many men and bring them joy. If you write for men, you may make some money and you may give someone a little joy and you may make a noise in the world, for a little while. If you write only for yourself, you can read what you yourself have written and after ten minutes you will be so disgusted, you will wish that you were dead.” – in New Seeds of Contemplation by Thomas Merton
