About
Soul Food. So you died and you have gone to heaven and you do not KNOW anyone. Or you do not recognize anyone here. And you are hungry and thirsting for something. But you do not know what kind of food to order…..and you have nothing to use as a means of exchange for the food. And yikes! You are no longer in the dominant culture. And you wonder if it is going to be like the day last week when you had your first colonoscopy, and nothing would stay within.
Paperless. You are paperless and undocumented. And you wonder if someone would ask you to leave. If you understood the language. Here. without any pockets.
Soul Food. So you had died and, in that first instance, whatever you were walking on seemed like a new obstacle, like the description of bridges which I had read in City of Falling Angels. “Do you see one as an obstacle, just another set of steps to climb? To get,” like the question posed by that count in Venice, “from one side to another.” Or did you see this bridge as a transition? One to go over very slowly, as part of a rhythm in trying to grasp the nature of gaseous intangible air. Having an intangible cloud-like nature, lacking substance but with real existence like a link between another chapter of life, between black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics…of one reality to another? Like in a speech I once heard about a place connected to the Blessing, where we all will be able to join hands and sing, with the air of mystery. But now lacking physical substance, but surrounded by a nature of a fascinating aura of mystery, awe, and power surrounding someone or something.
I am in the excavating business and these are views from a resident of Minneapolis-St. Paul (in the United States) where three or four years ago it looked like we were all going to end up paperless, with no morning newspaper to read, as the media companies folded. What would we do, and what would the effect be, in the dominant culture on human liberty? When the superficial skin was shed?
To be fair, since so much of the content is directed at theological issues, I should state that my blood is Irish. And as night followed day, I was Catholic. It was William Faulkner who wrote that the past is never dead. It is not even past.
Faulkner had grown up in the American South, after the Civil War, no longer in the dominant culture. When everything that was believed in was being wiped out. His writing tried to reconcile a few things. Like what it meant to be a Southern when you had seemingly lost everything. When you wake up in the morning. Trying to figure out where you were. Trying to figure out where you were going. Trying to figure out what the music all meant, if you were gonna survive the day. The sounds. Of the world. Of the people around you. Of the past. Of the future. The old songs. The traditional ones. The new. In a Land that once again is not yours.”
It was a world that had never looked at the morality of slavery, which had existed since the time of Abraham, and later Moses. Did you hear the whispers about why they survived? Or how they survived? Why were they here, these survivors – of Famine, of Slavery, of Holocaust? How had they survived such evil without being evil themselves? It had been a world, with the dead tree format, which never had had a Truth and Reconciliation Commission here to examine in the present the deep roots of the past — to examine pride and vainglory which had been contributing factors to all of the decay and destruction. So, no, you will not find the author’s name here.

Historians someday will look back on the cause and effect of the internet on human civilization, on how war was waged, on business, on people, and on relationships. Would Darwin’s Theory still apply?

AIR TURBULENCE: NOW A CHARGE FOR BARF BAGS?
JUL 15, 2008
The news was anchored to the world and a date in time. Eventually it was absorbed into history. And the world sure seemed out of control lately. The greed of people was matched up to all the places of the world. The stories of the cost of food, the price of gas, the false vales of housing prices …Fannie May, Freddie may not
Hail Mary. I wondered if she tired of the same old prayer to her, when people did not know what else to say. I read this homily delivered by Wllliam Byron, S.J., of Loyola College in Maryland on May 12, 2005 at a Baccalaureate Mass at Creighton University. He talked about “post-Resurrection time, when Jesus ‘showed up’ from time to time to visit with his disciples, his closest friends who were severely shaken by the current events, intending to shore up their spirits, strengthen their faith, and boost their confidence in themselves to deal with whatever lay ahead in an unknown future. As I said, Jesus would ‘show up’ from time to time and they were never sure where or when….’ Wllliam Byron, S.J. His description of prayer—was the same description that I had about writing. “It’s a habit that it is up to you now to cultivate, if you have not already done so. It doesn’t mean reading words that someone else wrote printed in a prayer book. How can anyone know what you want to say to God, or, more important, what God wants to say to you? REMAINDER LOST.
“If you write for God, you will reach many men and bring them joy. If you write for men, you may make some money and you may give someone a little joy and you may make a noise in the world, for a little while. If you write only for yourself, you can read what you yourself have written and after ten minutes you will be so disgusted, you will wish that you were dead.” – in New Seeds of Contemplation by Thomas Merton
